Yes it can. I have a solar hot water heater on my roof. It has Relief valves to keep the water from boiling.

For the solar panels, I don't see any reason why you couldn't have them in your front yard as long as the sun is hitting them. You will just have to run the wiring a little further than if they were on your roof and the setup will be slightly different.
Windmills work well assuming you get a good amount of wind. You don't need strong gusts all the time, as long as you have enough to make them spin. To get the most out of your renewable energy, it's good to have solar and wind power so when it's not sunny you have a backup and vice versa.
You face the decision though of buying a windmill or making one yourself. They can be very expensive to buy and have someone install for you so if you're trying to save money I would recommend building your own. I made 3 of them for my house and they are working out nicely. It's really not that hard to do if you're following a good set of windmill plans.
