Basically, it sucks to be poor. If I don't have the money to buy a car, I can't drive to Costco to pick things up cheap, and ultimately spend more over time. Super insulating my house would save energy costs ultimately, but if I'm living paycheck-to-paycheck, I have to just keep paying higher bills each month.
Solar panels won't be an economic win long-term for everyone, but even for those who would ultimately save money, the initial outlay is a blocker.
