My thought is probably not in the near term, at least in the US. If we invest in renewables, we'll probably invest more in wind technology. The primary reason is that wind is further along in terms of development as a technology. The best measure of a technology's maturity and readiness for use is looking at it's cost per kilowatt hours. Right now, wind costs about 5 cents per kilowatt hours, so that's in line with how much it costs to generate electricity from petroleum based fuels. I think wind is also easier to understand. Make larger windmills, and put them in better places, will bring down costs even more.
Solar power is still much more expensive, too high for widespread adoption. To make things a little confusing, there are many more competing technologist in the solar energy generation space. One is the use of photovoltaic cells that convert solar energy to electricity. The other converting solar energy to physical (boiling water), to electrical energy (via steam power electrical generator). Both still being studied.
The important thing that will determine if solar is adopted in this country in the next few years is subsidization. On it's own merits, solar is still too expensive. It is called mixed-oxide or MOX technology and if only a small fraction of the fuel is replaced with plutonium, many reactor designs will work fine. A reactor that runs on nothing but MOX is a different matter, altogether, and needs to be designed that way.
There are any number of concerns using Pu in reactors, though. First of all there is the proliferation risk and the cost to deal with that is enormous, both in terms of safety engineering, policing and politically. Most likely all of that would fall back in one way or another on the tax payer.
Secondly, natural Uranium is dirt cheap, literally and would become even cheaper if MOX was introduced on a large scale. Now, the people who mine Uranium wouldn't like that and it turns out that they have enormous political clout. They will probably always get enough politicians on their side, at least in the US, to suppress any attempts for fuel recycling.
But it is worse, still, because countries which reprocess like the UK, accumulate enormous amounts of Pu even without trying to make any more of it! It is simply a by-product of many nuclear fission reactor designs.

I don't expect that the world will establish a proliferation safe MOX recycling culture anytime soon. By the time we are smart enough to do that (50+ years from now), solar energy will probably have made it unnecessary to operate reactors on a large scale. Or so I hope. The less Pu we have to deal with, the better. The more we can bury miles underground, the better for the world.
