Well, the answerer who posted before me answered correctly why it was important to the organism that performs it. But I thought I would include a basic chemical approach as well. Just in case you needed it.
In order for any system to function it must require energy to work. Cells are no different.
Basically ATP is the source of chemical energy that cells use in order to perform its functions. In the case of plants they could turn solar energy into chemical energy (glucose) while animal cells could only transform chemical energy into other chemical energy. In photosynthesis (after the pigments are increased by solar energy and the electrons are passed down) the electron transport chain (found in the membrane of the thylokoids in a chloroplast) is responsible for passing down energy (via electrons, hydrogen ions) that will then bring about the causation to produce ATP which is the energy that the cells use.
In animal cells instead of the synthesis of ATP happening in the chloroplasts, the ATP production happens in the mitochondria. (animal cells have no chloroplasts). Instead of the mitochondria using light, it uses glucose and oxygen to produce its chem energy.
