I doubt that you are going to want to learn how to dope your own silicon wafers, add contacts and laminate them into PV panels.  I also doubt that you're going to even want the various chemicals to make e.g. cadmium-based cells anywhere near your house (cadmium is a very toxic metal).  In other words, making your own solar panels is not an at-home project.

You can buy solar panels based on cells of several different types.  A link to a Pricewatch-like website for current prices on solar panels is below.  Mounting panels to roofs or pole mounts, running conduit and wires, and installing battery banks and inverters are within the capabilities of skilled laypeople.

I’m jumping in on this since it seems like at least one answer missed the mark and the other left out some detail.

Solar panels produce direct current [DC] and your appliances use alternating current [AC]. There are numerous configurations and applications of solar power. Some systems have batteries and are off the grid. Some may have batteries and are on grid, and other still may have no batteries and are still on grid.

The importance here is whether or not the solar array is supplementing utility supplied power (as most home installations do). If you have a system that feeds into the electrical network, one that you could sell back power, then the microcontroller/inverter is going to perform 3 important functions.

1. Produce high quality sine wave
2. Ensure the AC power is in phase with line power
3. Sever the connection with the grid in case of power failure

In the case 1, the shape of the wave is important. Cheap inverters, like in RV’s, don’t produce nice sine waves. They are considered noisy and may damage sensitive electronic equipment. Light bulbs, toaster, and blenders don’t care, but your HDTV may not like it.

In case 2 it is critically important for the electricity being fed into the grid to match, or be in phase. If not one source would cancel out the other and kind of defeat the whole purpose. Maybe even damage equipment.

Case 3. If the power goes off you don’t want to try and supply the neighborhood with electricity or electrocute a line worker who could be trying to make a repair.

In summary, a microcontroller is going to be the brain that makes sure case 1,2 and 3 occur.
