This required two separate electrical installations, one for the solar system and the second for nonsolar appliances such as cookers, dishwasher, clothes washing machine, microwave, electric kettles, etc. Water will be heated by direct solar heaters , btut will pass through an electric hot water tank which will only operate when the solar heated feed water is not up to temperature - under noemal circumstances, this should not occur with any frequency.
But in the cases of bad weather when the battery charging was not optimal, there had to be a switch over system to allow operation of the normally solar powered appliances, lighting etc direct from the grid.
Allowing for amortization of the capital cost of the installation over a realistic time, say 10 years, the loss of interest on the capital, and the possible replacement of the battery system at least once during this time, the costs do not really justify going to a solar system. Under present conditions, based on cost only, solar is an expensive option,

You create a false premise in your argument. They vote for off shore drilling or they don't care about people. You fail to consider that they also care about the environment which ultimately effects the people.

I am not opposed to off shore drilling per se if it can done done safely. However, when it used as a reason to not expand alternative energy options then it becomes harmful.
Let's see politicians do something right (just this once) and approve drilling along with stimulus packages for cities that use a portion (even 25%) of their power needs from wind, solar, hydro, thermal, maybe even nuclear before we dump more oil and profits to corporate interest.
