I bought those books. I have CD's and Books on free renewable energy as well. It may not be a scam but no real information that was helpful to me. You get a book or CD that tells you the same things you can find on the web just by doing a search on the weakest search engines on the net. They say things like ask your local road crews for them. Here is a thought.. If the local road crew had free solar panels to give away the workers would take them home and sell them on ebay. Just go to a dealer or a good web dealers website and read and then ask questions. You can't buy anything for free. lol. If it is free it is free not for fee.

I still have those books and CD's from the very same people on that site laying aorund here somewhere. I think thay have a few other sites just like that one. As I remember in one of the books they tell you how to surive a blackout in cally by hooking a cheap inverter to your truck battery.. Duhh.. Then they talk about not being able to find gas for a generator but they have gas to run a truck? More of a way to lead you into thinking of making your own hydrogen and buying the hydrogen CD if you ask me.

And one other thing I found is that there is no way to stop them from sending you all that spam mail. It never stops comming trying to sell you the same books and CD's over and over. I bought the the books and CD's almost 6 years ago thinking I could learn something. But all it told me to do was to make my yard in to a junk yard by taking broken glass and other junk items. They will tell you to bake cakes and give to employees in glass shops to win them over so they will give you broken glass. Then they tell you to build your porch into a green house to warm your home. I guess it is a good idea but don't look very good and remember the permits and local codes and laws.

Tip on searching in Google and Yahoo. Forget about the first 30 to 100 lines in the list. They are all junk from big money trying to make big money or someone that just uses the word you searched for a bunch to get the page ranking. If you want real information you have to look on down in the list. I don't want to say all websites in the first 100 are junk but it just takes too long to find the good ones amist all the spam at the top.

Hey Luv, the easiest way to accomplish this is with a device called a microsine inverter. There are basically 2 models out there. One is built by Trace engineering, or was, I think they stopped making them in about 2005, but there are plenty on ebay. It is called the OK4U micro sine inverter. It mounts on the back of a solar panel, and converts the panel out put to 120 volts AC, then plugs into a normal outlet. The other is built by Enphase, same basic device. But to be honest, I wouldn't recommend doing it.

Mainly for the reasons already listed by your other answers here, and a few more. Using renewable energy is more than just technology. Trying to overpower our situation, by buying devices like panels, and micro inverters, then adding them to the already mixed up grid does nothing to address our ignorance of how we live. It is more about our lifestyle. We are constantly making new devices to fix the problems of our old devices, then having to maintain or replace both of them in time, each one using more energy than having none in the first place. The first key to living a greener life is to reduce our usage of energy, and other things. It is much cheaper and easier to plug phantom loads like cell phone chargers and VCR's into a power strip, then turn off the strip when we are not using them, then to buy a solar panel and use it to power these idiotic loads in the first place.

About 12 years ago, we were looking into doing exactly what you're suggesting now. In the end, we bought one 50 watt panel, a couple golf cart batteries and started making our own 12 volt power. It originally ran our low voltage under cabinet lights in the kitchen. Then we added a 12 volt radio/CD player, and some 12 volt outlets in the other rooms for small electronics. We learned a lot, and were producing some of our own power we could use to offset out homes electric bill. The real bonus came when the power was off one day, but we still had lights and a radio running. Now our entire home is powered by a 1.4 kilowatt solar array and a 900 watt wind turbine. We use solar water batch preheaters for hot water, and a wood stove is our primary heat. Our electric bill last month was $6.55, about average for our home now. If you really want to accomplish something, get that panel, then do some research and learn how to use it to charge some inexpensive batteries, and start running your laptop off it. Later add some LED cabinet lights and stuff like that. It's more fun, educational, and really gets you into the process. Putting the panel and microinverter on the porch rail and plugging it in is like going camping at the Hilton. In the end the outdoor experience is not very fulfilling.

Several years ago they even ran an article on our little 12 volt home sized system. If you subscribe, you can use their search engine to look up specs and wiring diagrams on our system in their archived articles site, just look for, "Small System First." You can change your lightbulbs to Compact Fluorescent bulbs (CFL's). They produce the same amount of light as a regular incandescent bulb, but using less than half the energy. They also last years instead of months.
There is an issue with mercury with them, but it is negligible. CFL's have only a TINY amount of mercury. Less than an old heating thermostat in a house. The problem arises when millions of CFL's are thrown into the landfills. 1 bulb is no big deal, millions cause a mercury problem.
The answer to that is, there are more and more places that are taking CFL's for recycling. I believe, if the sell them; they have to take them back for recycling. I have a bucket that I put them in and when it gets full, I take them to be recycled. My Ace hardware store in town has a big sign that they take burned out CFL's. But, I changed all the bulbs in my house out over 2 years ago and have yet to have one burn out.

You can start composting your garbage. All your vegetable waste, paper that is not shiny, cardboard, eggshells, all those can be composted. What you don't want to compost is any animal products like bones, meats, dairy, etc... If you don't have a yard, you can try Vermiculture, which is composting with worms. All you need is an 18 gallon container, like Rubbermaid or some other container, poke air holes in it and line it with soft screen material so the worms don't escape, and you can put your vegetable kitchen waste in there, also newspaper. It is a little more involved than that. You can look online under Vermiculture and you can find hundreds of sites that sell the worms, the starter bedding, full instructions, worm bins... Then when the worms have eaten all the garbage, the worm poop (called 'castings) are the BEST fertilizer for house plants.

In the US, there are solar rigs sold for RVs for $500 that'll run an appliance. For a few thousand $ you can get something set up for the home, and that includes solar panels and home sized wind turbines. VERY kewl idea and a lot more efficient and cheap than we were led to believe.
