That would depend on where you put it. I work in a pool store and we sell solar heaters for pools. I assume you mean the system that comes with solar panels as well? If so, you can get plastic solar panels or rubber ones. The plastic ones are cheaper but I would definitely recommend going with the rubber ones, they will last much longer. Also, when setting up the panels you have to be careful - if you lay them vertically, you will void the warranty.

They are an expensive option. A box can be around $300 and large pools are recommended to have 8-10 boxes of them. But you do save on the cost of operating a gas or electric heater, and they have a longer warranty so you won't have to replace them as often (the brand I sell comes with a 15 year warranty). You don't have to go with 8 boxes of the panels, but really the more boxes you buy, the warmer your pool will be.

You can also drop by your local pool store with a list of questions about solar heaters. They should be able to answer all of your questions, and this will help you make your educated decision.

Example: You burn gasoline in your car. Some of that energy moves your cylinders up and down. Some of it heats the water in your radiotor system that heats the air either outside your car or outside and in if you circulate air in your car cabin through your heater block, some of it heats up exhaust particles that then heats the air.

Some of that cylinder motion goes through your power train and turns your wheels, but some of it is dissipated as friction amongst your axle bearings (heat again). When you slow down, all the energy of motion becomes heat in your tires, brake pads and the road, but that energy was used for a while so I guess it doesn't count.

Some fraction of electricity generated becomes heat; heating up transmission lines incrementally, heating up wiring in your house, heating up AC to DC transformers (the little power bricks) .

The best way to save power is just not use it in the first place. I only turn up the thermostat on my hot water heater when I am about to use it, but better still woudl be to do without hot water ni the first place (then I don't have a pilot light), but even better would be to just use cold water for everything.

Consume less stuff. People think about doing things aroudn the home to save energy, but don't think everytime they buy something, there is significant energy investment in the manufacture of the goods and shipping them. Recycling is a great idea, but not using the aluminum can or paper in the first place saves far more energy.

Drive less. A hybrid is a nice idea, but if you don't drive in the first place, your mileage goes waay up. Bike, walk or just stay home.

In the end, conservation within the framework of your lifestyle will save an incremental amount of energy, (maybe 10-25% if you really try to be good abvout shutting off lights, turning down the heat, unplugging parasitics like TVs and AC to DC power transformers that power every electronic gadget, recycle) but it takes a fundamental lifestyle change (don't drive, don't purchase in the first place) to really save a lot.

nuclear energy is probably one of the fastest way to get large amounts of energy possible today besides microwave which is just a certain type of solar power.


the amount of water a nuclear reaction can heat up is many times more then any fossil fuel, wood, or natural gas. sure wind and hydro is "clean" but it doesn't make any were near as much power and unlike fossil fuels nuclear power doesn't pollute the air. that "smoke" they show coming out of the silos is steam.

solar is probably one of the best ways to get energy if the panels are in space and through microwave technology transferred to earth. but then again its all about the money. there is no money in efficiency. that's why crappy american cars break down so easily. you have to buy more, more profit
