I have some panels on my house and no they are not cheap. If you look around you can buy them for around $4.70 per watt for a 100 plus watt panel, this will make them $470 or more. But you will get a first quality panel. And no I do not know of any fed. government programs for home owners. These kind of programs usually only go to large companies. And it does not look like our government is going to help seeing how the let the large oil companies keep there tax programs but refused to help solar. We could also fix laundry to the rotating blades of a turbine, there by drying clothes the same time it produces electricity, but it is much easier to hang the clothes on a line outside the back door, so that is what most of us do.
We live in a home that is powered by the wind and sun. Our wind turbine is in the field behind the garage, because that is where the wind and space are, and the solar panels are on the roof of the garage, since the roof just sits there heating up when the sun shines anyway, it makes more sense to put the panels nearer the batteries they are charging then out in the field. Now we are making power two ways, solar and wind. I can't think of a single engineering advantage to fixing the panels to the turbine.
I also keep hearing a lot of talk about the efficiency of a solar panel. Most panels today are about 12% efficient, meaning they convert 12% of the incoming suns energy to electricity. The advantage of a more efficient panel is that you can create the same amount of electricity with a smaller space. This might be of interest on a space station, or skyscraper in a big city. As inefficient as our panels are, they only reqiure the space on our one car carport roof to power our entire home. We really don't need more efficient panels, we just need less expensive ones, then everyone could get involved. Interesting idea though, using solar panels as turbine blades.
