Solar energy is good, but I think our best option is not to rely on just one form of energy generation, but on various sources. Solar may work good in most places, but it's best suited for places like Arizona or California, whereas wind power might be better in the midwest or other windy areas. Geothermal I think is a great source of power that's often overlooked. It can provide base load power to utilities, which means it can produce power 24/7, unlike solar or wind. Nuclear is good so long as the waste is safely disposed of, and that can be very difficult to get the utilities to pay for that. Hydroelectric, at least in the US, has mostly been used up. We've dammed up pretty much every river that we could, and while we can keep using it, we can't really create more power from hydroelectric sources. Hydrogen and boimass (if you're referring to ethanol) aren't really ready to be widely adopted yet, the technology needs more work for them to become more cost competitive with other sources of power.
Where Does The Energy Come From To Power Milankovitch Cycles?
Venus, Jupiter & Mars are also big heavy objects & close enough to Earth to cause noticeable modulations to it's orbit.
My impression was that Jupiter was Earths predominate eccentricity modulator - but regardless the principal is this... If Earth were alone in the Solar System the eccentricity of it's orbit would not change - the variations responsible for the Milankovitch cycles come from gravitational influence of the other orbiting planets.
The 'energy' in question is the kinetic energy of the orbiting planets.
Not much energy gets 'consumed' though, it's more like it gets kicked back & forth via gravity.
So the process isn't exact ally 'powered' any more than any orbit is.
It takes a lot of energy to put something in orbit, but not much to keep it there.
"Bobble & Sudden" aren't really accurate terms here. What's happening is a very slow variations as to how elliptical Earths orbit is, & how tilted it is, and where the Orbital Summer is compared to Axial Summer. Right now the Orbital Summer is mild & in the middle of our Winter BUT when it intensifies & and slides into our Summer THAT will make for some pretty dramatic weather.
Earth's orbit varies in HOW elliptical it is (eccentricity) over a 100,000 year cycle from virtually circular to about 3 times its current eccentricity. The current value results in about 6.8% more solar power (isolation) striking the Earth at perihelion than aphelion.
So Earth's eccentricity does in fact generate a Summer of sorts. Let's call this the E-Summer.
However what we normally call Summer is based on Earth being tilted by 23.5 degrees.
Let's call this T-Summer.
Basically it means when the Northern Hemisphere is tipped toward the Sun, we Northerners have more direct light AND longer days - which of course means the Southerners are having shorter colder days, aka a T-Winter.
Hmmmm... but wait. The E-Summer happens to the whole planet once a year, whereas the T-Summer happens on opposite sides of the planet on opposite sides of the year, THAT means the E-Summer cannot possibly coincide with both T-Summers.
And it doesn't. It turns out that the middle of the E-Summer (perihelion) is about two weeks after the middle of the North T-Winter. In other words the Northerners have warmer winters than Southerners.
Well for now anyway.... because turns out the E-year (anomalistic) is about 25 minutes longer than the T-year (calendar year). Which means Earths perihelion is slowly moving backwards through the calendar. So 10,500 years from now the Sothern Hemisphere will have the warmer winters.
Of course HOW MUCH warmer the winters are depends on which way the Eccentricity value has moved. If it goes to zero, then the E-Summer goes away. When it's 3 times the present value, it's a LOT warmer because the E-Season insolence varies by 23%, rather than today's modest 6.8%.
Then add to that the fact that Earth's tilt is also oscillating about 4 degrees every 41, 000 years, creating greater & smaller T-Season swings.
Collectively these are called Milankovitch cycles and more than a few Climatologists believe they explain Earths long term Global Temperature cycles.
So don't let anyone tell you the E-Summers don't matter. 6.8% is NOT insignificant. That said though they affect the WHOLE globe & only shift 1 day every 58 years - so the seasons we NOTICE are Tilt driven.
Now beyond this there is also a theory that says Cosmic Ray variance from our Suns orbital transits through the Galactic arms creates long periods of intense cloud formation.
(But this is not part of the Milankovitch cycles)
