The Bakken Fields in North and South Dakota. New drilling and oil recovery technology is making the capture of this oil feasible and some development is now underway. For rain just build a large paddle wheel type structure with half of it underneath a structure so the the rain would not hit it. The rain falling on the exposed surfaces of the paddle wheel would cause it to turn and then the shaft could be attached to a generator to produce electricity. If you do not cover half of the paddle wheel then the rain would fall equally on both sides and cancel out any movement. This would not be very efficient unless the rain is falling at a very high rate for a long time but it would work. Grist mills use a stream of water to do the same thing only they turn grinding wheels instead of generators.

A generator or alternator converts mechanical energy (rotation) into electrical energy. As electric current is produced and supplied to the electric load that same current produces a magnetic field of its own. This magnetic field is of such polarity that it opposes the magnetic fields in the alternator which produced the electric energy. Simply as you take electric power from a generator, the generator becomes harder to turn . This is why you hear the engine of an electric generator load up when you add electric load.

To your question regarding rear wheels turning a generator...... you should now understand that such generators added to the wheels would make the wheels harder to turn as electric power is generated. The effect is that the rear wheel generators would act like a drag on the car and slow it down. In essence you have an electrical brake.



This is the basis of regenerative braking. The same motor that consumes electric power to produce mechanical revolutions of the wheel is used as a generator to brake the car. The difference between a motor and generator is the direction the mechanical and electric power take with respect to which is consumed to produce the other. (i.e. consume mechanical energy to produce electric energy or consume electric energy to produce mechanical power)

The windmill idea runs along the same lines the added drag the windmill generates must be over come. As such you need to consume more power to make the car move against the added drag of the windmill. Hence there is NO free energy.


You can use a solar panel to gain some energy provided that adding the panel doesn't create so much drag that you expend more energy overcoming that drag compared to the energy produced by the sun.

You can use Wind and Solar as charging stations to recharge the car while its parked.

The Zap Xebra electric truck does have a solar panel options. But with a top speed of 35MPH drag is limited and you can get some range extension. But you get more range extension by having the panel trickle charge the battery while its parked on a sunny day.

The Nissan LEAF has a small optional solar panel on its rear spoiler for topping off the auxiliary battery. This battery is not used for propulsion but for running the radio and other accessories.


Trust me if it were at all possible then these devices would already be in wide use on cars. There is a reason why you don't see windmills on electric cars.... They are not technically feasible to operate as you would like.


Finally you also have to consider economics..... adding micro solar panels adds cost to a vehicle and such uints will be limited in size. It would be better to spend that money in similar technology that is more effective such as a traditional roof top solar PV system. You will be able harvest more power with a roof top system than a car mounted system a fraction of the size. The car PV system would by its nature also be at a higher cost per watt. You would proabaly never recoup the expense of the car mounted PV system
