But there are two ways to reduce the use of traditional sources of energy - and still remain somewhat comfortable as a warm blooded, human, critter. The first we often think of is to find an alternative source such as solar versus oil powered. While thinking of alternative sources, we often turn immediately to alternative devices of gathering that energy into a useful form, such as a solar panel. The second way to reduce the use of traditional sources of energy is to decide just what conditions we need or want to mitigate within our local environment and then how to do so. In the stereo-typical desert there is one heck of a lot of solar energy that serves to heat the dirt/sand, our dwellings, our bodies, and everything else. If you look at the traditional houses of the American Southwest and even the prarrie houses of the American Plains, great thicknesses of local "dirt" were used in dwelling constuction to both insulate against the summer heat and the winter cold. Often the dwellings in the American Plains were dug into the earth to further mitigate the outside temperature extreams where as in the South West, those that could surrounded their dwellings with walls that shaded their dwelling walls. Further dwellings, hardscaping, and landscaping were often constructed to mitigate and use rising heat, breeze, and wind issues. In general, the more insulated and the more shaded the dwelling walls in an intense sun area, the less energy required to remain comfortable. Of course, this is true double fold when discussing doors and windows which are the portals through which sunlight/solar energy not only heats the outside of our dwellings but enters into and heats the inside of our dwellings. If one wants to enter a different level of energy reduction and/or self-sufficientcy then thinking in terms of 12 volt systems from wiring to lighting to appliance and tool selection can be readily part of an alternative energy source discussion as many options are available right off the vehicle and RV parts store shelf.

There are a number of folks who "live off the grid" or supply a number/all of their own electrical needs that have a web presense. Just for example if we take cars. There are very few efficient battery power cars in the market.Public demand can be the reason. The technology is still developing. We dont have public car charging stations near offices or malls like we have gas stations. But still are efforts being taken like some malls or offices are providing designated parking spaces for such cars and giving extra travel allowance for such car users.
With oil the extraction, refinement, and then transportation is very costly. Oil can not be made locally. ( offcourse everyone knows that) so we burn so much fuel to transport fuel.. thats crazy.
