If A 1200W Appliance Is Only Used For 1 Minute Off My Solar Battery, How Many Stored Watts Were Used Up?
I Have Batteries That I Supply/Maintain With Solar Panels. I Try To Ensure That I Don'T Use The Batteries Lower Than 50% Of Their Stored Capacity. For Example, A 12V Battery With 110 Ah Is &Quot;Storing&Quot; 1320W. But I Never Want It To Go Below 50%, So I Can Only Use 660W At A Time Without Letting It &Quot;Fill&Quot; Back Up. So If I'M Using A 1200W Appliance (Such As A Power Tool Or Vacuum) For A Portion Of An Hour, Am I Using Only A Portion Of That 1200W Or Have I Used The Entire 1200W As Soon As I Turn It On? For Example, If I Run It For 15 Minutes, Have I Used 300W Or The Entire 1200W Shown?

Batteries do not store "watts". The energy stored in them is usually measured in watt-hours (w-hr) or kilowatt-hours (kWH).

A 12 volt - 110 amp-hr battery can store about 1.3 kWH (1,300 w-hr). Battery rating are usually based on a very slow discharge rate. The amount of usable power drops the faster you discharge the battery. See the chart in the data sheet linked to below for a common 12 volt -110 amp-hr battery.

A 1,200 watt appliance uses 1,200 watt-hours (1.2 kWH) per hour of operation. So if you run it for 15 minutes it will use 300 watt-hours of energy.

Your battery has to supply more power than that because you will lose some in the inverter. Lets guess a 25% loss (this depends on how good an inverter you have).

So the battery has to supply about 1.6 kW into the inverter. This is about 133 amps @ 12 volts. (How big are your battery cables?)

Now the guessing begins. I'll make a wild *** guess and say that your battery has 0.5 wWH capacity @ 133 amps discharge. 0.5 kWH/1.6 kW = 0.31 hours = 18 minutes. Half of that is 9 minutes.

Your battery was probably never meant to supply 133 amps for more than a few minutes. Notice that the sample data sheet only has data down to a 5 hour discharge rate; that's about 16 amps - 200 watts.

A much better idea is two use several batteries to get the discharge rate down to something reasonable. To deliver the 1600 watts you would need about 8 to get down to the 5 hour discharge rate.

Might as well say 10 batteries in case the inverter has more than 25% loss 8-)

If your battery is rated to act as a starting battery ( ~720 amps CA), then running 133 amps for a minute shouldn't be a problem. But how many one minute shots you get is a good question, the time between shots would probably have some affect.

Coal and Nuclear generation is what is considered "base load" -- those generation plants run all of the time 24 hours/ day. Natural Gas are usually "peaking units". They are expensive to operate (vs coal and nuclear) and are only used for portions of the day when power is most needed.

Solar and wind are intermittent. They only produce and operate when the wind is blowing, or when the sun is shining.

Wind and solar ouputs/costs can vary greatly depending on the designs. First of all solar...newer thin-cell designs offer much greater outputs compared to silicon based systems as measured per K/Hr. Other designs that use multi spectrum or solar heat-harvesting can also increase yields/lower costs although construction costs are higher and require large solar farms....thin-cells can be roof mounted or in small arrays. I'll add some links below with more info.

Wind turbines can also vary depending on large fixed blade or egg-beater/vertical axis designs... VAWT's..which are smaller/easier to mount on roofs or small areas and require less wind speeds than larger units.

If your plan is to create a large solar array/wind farm and transmit power to villages, then infrastructure costs go up versus small, local turbines or solar arrays which can be roof or pole mounted. LED lighting would lower energy requirements.

What Are Two Problems With Solar Energy?

Cost and Reliability.

It only produces power when the sun is shining. That is only 35-40 percent of the time. Since power is needed 24/7, we must still have another source for back-up, or build a very large and more complex system to store electrical power which is even more expensive and inefficient.

One panel about 3x4 ft. can only produce about 100 watts of power for say 8-10 hours a day on average. Even if I have a very good storage system, I will need 2-3 panels to burn a 100watt bulb for 24 hours. You also will need a rectifier / distribution controller, and charge controller, and battery bank. All of this drives the cost up to the point the system can never pay for itself with the average cost of grid power at 10 cents per kilowatt hour.
