This is the amount of energy used to produce something, including mining the raw materials, transporting them, making the final product, and transporting and installing. There have been studies done on this very thing on both solar panels and wind turbines. The problem is the variables are quite broad, and the end use of the product affects the timeline it takes to recover the embodied energy. In general, solar panels earn back their embodied energy in 1.5 to 6.25 years. Obviously if you install on in a shady location or cloudy climate, the number might be larger. Wind has larger variables, but in the end a modern turbine earns back its embodied energy in .75 to 8.5 years, again depending on the wind available, and even more so on the tower, on shore versus off, and so on. So it's hard to nail down.
The achilles heel to solar however is no matter how efficiently you produce it, and how short the shipment, even in a good sunny climate, it won't work at night, where a well placed turbine can produce 24/7, this is why linlyons swag is probably more accurate than most.
What is worth mentioning is that neither sources is better than the other. We have both here at our home, and in most locations they are "complimentary," meaning they work well together. In general, when it's sunny, it is usually quite calm. When it is cloudy, or the days are short, such as in winter, it's windy. Most renewable homes that have one technology also have the other as well. It isn't important which is better, they are both better when they work together.
A common argument you might hear goes like this, "A solar panel will never earn back the energy used to manufacture it during its lifetime." Even if this was correct (it isn't ), it wouldn't matter. Electricity has been around for over a century now, so it isn't going away any time soon. The question should be, "What is the best way to produce it?" Suppose you build a solar array that peaks out at 1 megawatt (MW). Then you build a coal fired plant next to it that also produces 1 MW, which earns back its embodied energy first? The answer is the coal plant never does. We forget that once you build a power plant that works on any non renewable source, such as coal, oil, natural gas or nuclear, we then have to feed it coal, oil, gas and so on the rest of its life, which it converts to electricity at a rate somewhere below 100%, so it keeps on digging itself a deeper and deeper carbon hole it can never crawl out of.
