OK - first, my understanding of the phrase "going green" is this: To attempt whenever possible to buy items that are produced in a way that does minimal harm to the natural environment. In addition, to purchase items that are grown or produced in a sustainable manner. This means that for example. Top soil is a limited resource in the sense that there is a limited amount of it and when used up it can take hundreds to thousands of years for nature to replenish it. So if we practice sustainable agriculture, we're growing things in a way that doesn't cause the top soil to be washed away nor does it deplete the top soil of its fertility.
Now, what does going green have to do with global warming. Global warming - at least in part - is being caused by increased amounts of fossil fuels being burned. Fossil fuels are coal, petroleum, natural gas, and oil shale. Coal is the worst offender of these as far as causing problems and just being overall horrible for the environment. When fossil fuels are burned, they release among other stuff - CO2 and Methane into the air. CO2 and Methane are "greenhouse gases" - they trap heat that has risen from the Earth's atmosphere around the Earth, instead of letting it exit into space. Now, if everything that was produced was made using human, animal power, or a non-polluting energy source like solar power or wind, producing things wouldn't be a problem. Of course that's not the case. Fossil fuels are burned in the production of almost every item we purchase or use. So, if we want to cut fossil fuel usage and so cut emissions, one thing we can do is to cut the amount of energy used to make these items. Buying partially or totally recycled items achieves this. Whether it is recycled plastic, glass, aluminum, or paper, significantly less energy is used to re-manufacture something from recycled material than to produce something from "virgin", (unused) material. One reason for this is the energy that would be used for mining or cutting the trees isn't needed. You already have the material.
This not only saves energy but cuts down on deforestation. This is important because deforestation - the clearing and cutting of trees - is a contributor to rising CO2 levels. The less trees that are cut down the less CO2 released into the atmosphere and the more CO2 removed - remember, plants remove CO2 from our air. So by buying recycled products we cut down on deforestation and cut down on energy usage, which in turn means cutting down on fossil fuel emissions.
Going green also refers to the idea of buying food locally whenever possible. Imagine the fuel consumption needed to ship tomatoes from Mexico or California to let's say - New York. That's a long way. What if instead of buying these tomatoes that were grown and shipped from many many miles away, you grew your own or went to a local market near your house where people sold locally grown vegetables. Buy doing this, you didn't contribute to global warming because your tomatoes weren't shipped from somewhere 800 miles away. Instead they were grown 20 miles away. Less emissions produced because alot less emissions are given off driving 20 miles versus 800. Remember, cars and trucks burn fossil fuels.
Finally, "going green" can mean making every effort to cut our energy usage personally. Turning off lights, unplugging cell phones, using mass transit whenever possible, and using energy wise appliances. Again, the whole key is to cut energy usage. Fossil fuel usage powers the majority of homes in this country and that means everything in the home. The less energy used the less fossil fuel burned. Hope that helps. Good luck!
