Disadvantages:

Panels are a net energy loss - meaning that it takes more energy to manufacture them than what you will get back from them in their useful lifetime (a few panels will survive to pay for themselves as carbon neutral) The common silicon cells are only a maximum of 17 percent efficient. Pay back is based on the number of days per year when you have sufficient light to actually generate power. Dense clouds, fog, and winter solstice reduce this number further.
2. They are fragile and not really able to withstand weather. Fortifying the installations add more expense and surrounding them with protection can cause them to overheat and fail. Most insurance companies will not insure them without a huge premium. This directly applies to the cost of operation.
3. Return on investment is very difficult on a large scale unless you can manually cover them in a hail or wind storm. This infrastructure cost must also be included in total investment value. I will not even suggest a value of the time value for such management.
4. Partial failure of internal components, connections, controllers, etc. reduces their efficiency over time leading to expensive replacement options.
