Just Wondering If It Is Possible To Recycle Solar Panels And Where That Would Be Done. If It Is Possible, Is There A Money Refund In Return. Or Would It Be Better To Just Take The Metal Off And Get A Refund In That Way? Looking For Basically Any Answer Here.

Although, I haven't been able to find like a drop off location or anything like that.

Here's two phone numbers if you want to ask them. It's Sunday, and I'm assuming they're closed, otherwise I'd just call for you. San Diego (619) 562-7183 or Berkeley (510) 843-1113. It's a company called Borrego Solar. They look like a BIG solar company that specializes in commercial, residential and public sector turnkey, grid–connected solar electric systems. With over 25 years of experience. They sound like they would know about recycling, and at least be able to give you more information.

I think because it's such a specialized item that is being recycled, there aren't going to be many options/drop off locations. Which ever option you choose (disassemble, or recycle as a whole) might depend on if you're looking to "save the environment" or "make a buck."

Can You Give Me Information On Solar Panels? If So Plese Give Me It?

I am not sure what kind of solar panel information you are looking for but the following provides basically how they work. Near the bottom of the page is some more information not on how they work but on other things.

A solar cell converts sunlight into electricity. Photons from the sun strike the solar panel made of a semiconductor material. The most common material used for a solar cell is silicon. The incident photons are absorbed by the electrons in the silicon semiconductor. The big panels of a solar cell are sometimes referred to as a the collectors because they do just that -- collect sunlight.

If the photon give the electron enough energy the electron becomes a conduction electron and can be used to carry energy in the form of electricty. If the electron does not get more than enough energy to "break free" the energy is re-released as a photon and some heat (vibration).

The sun produces photons in a range of energies with and majority in the range of 1 to 2 electron volts. The typical energy needed to create a conduction electron in photo-active semiconductor solar cells is about 1.2 electron volts. It turns out that about 75% of the sun's photons have an energy greater than this minimum energy.

Let's do a quick and approximate calculation. The intensity of sunlight on the earth is about 1000 Watt/meter^2. So we would need a thousand one meter by one meter solar collectors to generate about 750,000 Watts. A typical coal burning power plant is capable of generating 1,000,000 Watts of power for several hundred tons of coal.

Solar cells are ideal for some uses like calculators where a lot of power is not consumed. Another ideal use is in satellites. Out in space, the intensity of sunlight is far greater than on earth because the photons do not have to travel through the atmosphere to hit the collectors.

Unfortunately, the photons with energy below the threshhold reduce the efficiency because of the heating of the sunlight collector makes it less efficient. Worst of all, the semiconductor material degrades with time. The constant absorption of energy makes the material less receptive. Sometimes this degradation can be reversed by reprocessing the material but that can be difficult and certainly is a nuisance.

Materials scientists and private companies are constantly trying to improve solar cells. A huge variety of material compositions has been tried with various advantages. Presently, France, Japan, and Germany are the countries spending the most on research for improved solar cells. Because of the research and manufacturing costs, solar generated electricty still costs more dollars per kilowatt-hour than coal burning power plant electricity but soon it should be competitive. And once the initial cost of installing solar collectors on a house has been absorbed the future cost is very low. Some government incentives have been put in place to help offset some of the initial cost faced by home builders and owners.

At some time in the future (50 years or more) fossil fuels will be depleted and humans will have to turn to other energy sources and solar cells will be a big part of generating electricity.

I recently had panels installed on my home. I have a great rebate system in my area, my utility paid $10K and I paid $16K. During the summer months it almost zeros out my bill, I don't know about the winter yet, we'll have to see. It was only estimated to reduce my bill by 1/3. I should break even in about 6 years. Less if production keeps anywhere near where it is.

I suggest if you are considering solar, get a no cost no obligation quote, they should be able to give you info on rebates as well as size, cost and break even time for your situation.

There are lots of things you can do to reduce your energy usage. Standby energy was costing me about $50 a month, that is when tv's or other appliances are plugged in but not on, they still use electricity. An easy fix is plug your enetertainment appliances into a powerstrip with a switch, flip it off when the tv isn't on and all the standby energy stops. Same thing with chargers of all types, cell phones, laptops, battery backups and toothbrushes, unplug them when they aren't charging.

Insulation, energy star appliances, shade trees, using natural light and CFL's all help too.

A Lot Of Us Can'T Put Up Solar Panels, Or Buy A Hybrid Vehicle, And There Isn'T Always Public Transit Where We Live. What Are The Little Things You Do To Help The Environment? I Always Use Public Transit Or Walk, And I Use Ge Energy Smart Light Bulbs. Something I Don'T Do Is Use The Low Flow Toilets And Shower Heads, So That Is My Big Environment Sin.

I use compact florescent in as many light fixtures as I can. I recycle as much as I can. I compost. I grow and make as much as I can by myself. I have a garden, I make my own bread, clothes, soap etc. I figure every time I cut out the factory it has to better for the environment.

I Think The Average Household In The Us Uses Approx. 30Kwh Every Day. How Many Solar Panels Would You Need To Power This Home For A Year If The Sun Shines 75% Of The Day And How Powerful Must They Be?

The only information missing is where the house is located. That makes a huge difference. Sun shining for 75% of the days in Maine is different from the 75% of the days in California.

But as a data point, our house is in San Jose, California, and we use half that energy on average per day (closer to 15 kWh). A 3 kW array (about 220 square feet) keeps up with our electrical usage for the year. So make that a 6 kW array for your theoretical house that uses 30 kWh a day, and increase the size more for a more northerly or cloudy location.
