It Is Properly Grounded And Everything (-12V Ground Into A Rod Driven Outside) Will I Still Need To Get A Surge Protector? There'S No Coax, Ethernet, Or Telephone To Ground. It'S A Simple Electric Solar System With A Few Things To Plug In. I Just Want To Ensure Everything Is Grounded And Safe Before The Spring Storms Kick Up March-May. Danny, we had lots of problems with our solar installation and lightning hits the first year it was up. In the end what we did was similar to you. First the array frame needs to be grounded to its own rod, which I believe yours is. Next, it isn't enought to just ground DC negative, you should connect DC negative and inverter nuetral to a common point, ours is onto a large grounding block inside the DC disconnect box. Then run a #4 bare wire from the block to two or three ground rods at least 8 feet seperated from each other. This will prevent stray power surges from finding their way across your inverter to your DC negative. We also installed surge arrestors on both sides of our inverter, but I don't know if it helped, we just have not had a problem in 14 years now, and I've had plenty of storms. I already use this technology. I decided to build my own solar panel and was successful. Now it works well, and it helps take some of the electricity cost away. I could not build the wind turbine though. My neighbors were not to happy with a large object obstructing their view. But if it works for you, go for it. How Effective Are Solar Panels In Alaska And Other Places In The Us With Limited Sunlight?

I live in Alaska's Interior and have 7 each 130 watt solar panels on my home so far. Each year I add a few more panels and beef up the system.

From the 2nd week of November to the 2nd week of January I can expect no output. Not even a damn trickle charge of 1 watt. The sun is so weak - our street light sensors cannot tell the sun is up and they stay on all day.

On the othe hand - May, June and July I get 100% of the 130 watt rating of the panels - nearly a full KW per hour - for 16+ hours per day. You simply could not ask for a better place to use these panels in the world than Alaska in the summer!! Considering we are paying almost $.75 a KW that's pretty sweet. If I bothered to move the panels in the am and pm I could grab another couple of kw's at the extremes of the sun's path.

The months between Jan and April, and the fall from August to October I can expect to see my panels hit max rating at mid day, but they will be about 60% for the rest of the day.

If you are willing to go out every three or four hours and re-positon your panels in the daytime it can increase the array effeciency in Alaska. Most automatic devices are out of my price range.

I have a 24Kw battery bank. In the summer it stores the mornng's energy so we can use it for cooking, running the tv, computers, and other low wattage appliances. In the winter - this banks servers more as a UPS - in case the regular electricity goes on the fritz. At -50F it doesn't take long for the pipes to freeze if commercial power goes out. It will keep my oil heater, kitchen, and 60" big screen tv and blue ray going for a week before I need to fire up a generator and recharge the bank for 12 hours.
