Definitely. One big factor is their efficiency rating - how much of the sun's energy is converted into electrical energy. Generally speaking, a silicon based solar panel (the hard panel that doesn't bend) has better efficiency and lower cost than the thin-film solar panels, but there's a bit of overlap in the two ranges. The thin film ones will weigh a lot less which could be important if you're covering the whole car in them.
First Solar has a thin-film solar panel with an efficiency of a little over 20% in the lab, I don't think they're selling them yet. But there are silicon based solar panels for sale with an efficiency of 22%. But a cheap solar panel (like the ones on backpacks to recharge your cell phone) may only have an efficiency of 10% or 12%.
Edit: Just as FYI, an electric car typically uses about 200-250 watt-hours to travel a mile under normal conditions. You can buy a solar panel at home depot's web site that's 1/3 square meter and produces 80 watts.

Only the solar panels are eligible for the credit. Replacing the shingles doesn't count.
The solar panel company a) isn't an auditor and b) figures if they don't break out the expense on the estimate, the auditor won't be able to either. Doesn't make it right.
You do know, right, that this a NON-refundabe credit, right? If you install $40K of panels, you would be eligible for $12K of tax credit, but if your tax bill is only $3K, you would get $3k and carrry the remaining $9K to 2015. Unless the law is extended the carryover stops with the 2016 tax return.

Any hardware store should have what you are looking for. However, I do not recommend screwing anything into a sheet metal roof with out proper flashing. Caulking, though it is widely excepted as a waterproofing agent, tends to break down faster then the lifetime of any roof. I assume you have a standing seam roof? My suggestion would be to clamp the pipes onto the seams instead of creating any penetrations in the roof.

Hey James, Kano is correct here. There are some toxic side effects to building solar electric panels, mainly in the doping process that mixes the silicone pancakes with boron. The amount of energy needed to make them is not 'insane' however. There have been lots of studies on the 'embodied energy' of solar panels, wind turbines and so on. This refers to the amount of energy a solar panel has to generate to offset how much was used in manufacturing them. It's difficult to quantify, but on average, a solar panel earns back its embodied energy in 2 to 6 years, depending on how far it is shipped and where it is used.
It's always interesting to me that people only hold renewable energy technologies up to this yard stick. I never hear news articles or blogs asking about the embodied energy in a coal plant, or nuclear reactor. And there are very few studies done on it. What you have to remember is this: Electricity has been with us for over a century now, it isn't going anyplace, so what is the best way to produce it? If you bulid a coal plant and put it along side a solar array that generates the same amount of power, which earns back its embodied energy first? The answer is the coal plant never does. We forget that once we invest our embodied energy building a coal plant, nuclear plant or oil or gas fired turbine, we then have to feed it fossil fuel the rest of its life, which it converts to electricity at some efficiency less than 100%. So it keeps digging itself a deeper energy hole it can't climb out of until the plant has to be decomissioned and destroyed. At least a panel or wind turbine have a chance to get even some day.
