I can give you my personal view, which is they are controversial because they have a liberal, anti-oil, environmental stigma attached to them. Together with our solar array, they run the entire property about 90% of the time. I don't hug trees or throw rocks at SUV's, but that does not free me from the responsibility to try to clean up after myself. After studying the science of energy, it simply does not make sense to me to burn coal to run my air conditioner. The one thing that amazes me about the entire renewable energy field is the amount of misinformation there is. Take your other answers here, like, "Huge maintenance costs, they will never pay for themselves," and so on. Ours has paid for itself several times over the last 11 years. It even pays a premium on the days that our grid power is out, but our home still has electricity, hard to put a price tag on that. As far as maintenance, I have done nothing more than inspect the blades and tower annually, and touch up the paint on ours.
