Panels are labeled as to their nominal output. Efficiency can be viewed in two different ways.
First- conversion efficiency. The panels themselves are only about 15 ro 18 percent efficient at converting the suns energy to electricity currenlty. This according to manufactuers data sheets.

Second is your efficiency of mounting. Ideally you want the panels to be prependicular to the suns rays at all times. For various reasons this is not always the case. Compromises are made in the mounting that tries to optimize the panels for their location. This could be considered efficiency, but is difficult to measure accurately because you were limited in the manner of how could mount them, so compairing each installation to the ideal is at best a guess if you wanted to generate numbers.

Usually when a panel is mounted in a fixed position,
*you want to mount them at an angle that is the same as your lattitude plus 12 to 23 degrees
depending when you want your peak output.
*facing "Solar South"- which is not always ordinal south on your compass. It is the mid point of the period where the sun is unobstructed. In the southern hemisphere- Solar North.

In your question- the ony way to achieve 4 kilowatts is to find the same size panel with a conversion efficiency of 60 to 80 percent- shich does not yet exist.

The Chinese made panels compare comparably oor favorably to those made in Japan, Korea or the US, and most other countries. There is a Belgian company that has been boasting a 20 percent efficient panel, but they are not widely available.

At certain times of the day when the panel is in optimal or near optimal position, your 12 volt rated panel could output slightly more than 20 volts, and maybe more current than the nominal rating. So a 1 Kw panel could at times be actually producing 1250 Watts for short periods. Not much more than that though.

There are two main types of solar power. One produces electricity, the other produces heat.
The electrical type are called "photovoltaics", the heat type are "thermal".
Photovoltaics are not presently very efficient, converting less than 15% of the suns energy to electricity, but by the time you build, they should be better, and cheaper. Thermal solar is much more efficient, especially if you use it to heat your water, because the system runs all year. Home heating is not as good, because winter is not a good time to collect solar. When you design your house, you can take advantage of "passive" solar, which is basically putting a lot of good windows on the south side (or north side if you are south of the equator!) and letting the winter sun shine in. These windows need to be very good, or have an insulator to cover them at night and cloudy days or they will gain energy all day, only to lose all of it at night.

As far as your house goes, it's not so much a matter of how big it is, as how well insulated it is. If you "super insulate" it, you will need very very little heating or cooling energy.
The other cost you will have is for things like computers, refrigerators, TVs, sound systems, lights, fans, cooking equipment and water heating. By picking the most efficient, you can reduce the size of the photovoltaic system you would need, and using solar water heating will handle 50% of the yearly amount with present technology for about $3500. A photovoltaic system to handle all your electrical needs would be quite expensive now, in the $10,000 to $20,000 range, but that cost will continue to fall, and by the time you build it should be closer to $5000.

Hey Ed....I don't know when you bought your system, or what other costs were associated with it...but 6KW systems don't cost 40K anymore...this from Solar Today "A 25-year warranty accompanies the Sharp panels. In 2003, we paid $18,000, which included the eight batteries, two inverters, hardware, 6,000 watts of solar panels and labor."....and King solar sells a "whole house" package for $11,000... but they don't say how big it is. The average home in California uses about 7000 KW per to get that much is going to be more expensive. Our young friend here is thinking ahead. If a house is located right and designed well, then the most efficient appliances and lighting is selected, it would be easy to live well on half that 7000KW.

These Solar Panels Will Have Wires/Alligator Clips Running Through Into The House Into A Small Compartment, And From There We Are Wanting It To Turn Something On Electrically. We'Re Hoping To Have A Small Light Bulb In The House Turn On, And A Windmill Outside The House. If I Were To Buy A Windmill, How Can I May It So It Turns On When The Solar Panel Gets Energy And Runs It Through? Solar panels are rated for conditions around 1000 watts per square meter (1000W / m^2).

A lamp has much less visible light power. We can say that an incandescent lamp produces less than 10% of its output as light, the rest is heat (near infra red) that may be only partly utilised by the solar cells. Thus a 100W bulb provides less than 10W of light. If all this light is collected and evenly directed to the cell/s it wll be able to produce 10W/cell-area_m^2 in watts per square meter. Probably a PAR lamp is the closest to achieving this. An example, if the cell is 5cm square and illuminated by all the light from the lamp, it could be 10W / 0.0025m^2 = 4000W/m^2. This is better than the sun because it is a much smaller area with 10W on it. The spectrum is different to the sun, so you cannot expect an exact result.

Try this, maybe with a separate PAR lamp for each cell, or whatever it takes to get even illumination. Heat will be a problem, you may need a fan. This will drive the windmill too.

Adjust the height of the PAR lamps to suit the coverage of the cells. If all the light falls on cells that is good. Remember, even illumination.

You can use leds as lights because they need little power. The white type need about 3.6V and 10 milliamps to operate. The illumination on the cells can be adjusted to get this current. Measure cell current with a multimeter connected as a short circuit across the cell on the milliamp current range. The voltage may be around 0.5V per cell and is reasonably constant, so you need 8 cells in series to get enough voltage. No resistors etc are needed, because the cell current is limited by the illumination. The led is polarity conscious. It must be connected around the right way. Several leds can be connected in parallel if the panel supplies more current, 10mA per led, and each led has its own ballast resistor, about 100 ohms.

In theory you could have a small efficient electric motor driving the windmill, driven by the solar cells. I think better to use the fan. If you cannibalise solar garden lights these give the led and the solar cells. These often use a small electronic board to increase the voltage so (for example) 2 leds can be driven from only 5 cells. You need cells to produce around 50mA for this. These components allow a cheaper battery arrangement basically (just 2.5V).
