The problem is the variables are quite broad, and the end use of the product affects the timeline it takes to recover the embodied energy. In general, solar panels earn back their embodied energy in 1.5 to 6.25 years. Obviously if you install on in a shady location or cloudy climate, the number might be larger. Wind has larger variables, but in the end a modern turbine earns back its embodied energy in .75 to 8.5 years, again depending on the wind available, and even more so on the tower, on shore versus off, and so on. So it's hard to nail down.

A common argument you might hear goes like this, "A solar panel will never earn back the energy used to manufacture it during its lifetime." Even if this was correct (it isn't ), it wouldn't matter. Electricity has been around for over a century now, so it isn't going away any time soon. The question should be, "What is the best way to produce it?" Suppose you build a solar array that peaks out at 1 megawatt (MW). Then you build a coal fired plant next to it that also produces 1 MW, which earns back its embodied energy first? The answer is the coal plant never does. We forget that once you build a power plant that works on any non renewable source, such as coal, oil, natural gas or nuclear, we then have to feed it coal, oil, gas and so on the rest of its life, which it converts to electricity at a rate somewhere below 100%, so it keeps on digging itself a deeper and deeper carbon hole it can never crawl out of.
