When you communicate with the outside, often you do so not in real time (here on Earth, you can communicate in real time only because the radio signals take a very short time to travel). Until we can find some way to overcome the limitation of speed of light in the propagation of communication signals, you'll be limited to sending recordings and waiting for the recorded answer to arrive -- kinda like writing emails or posting videos with the limitation that you have to wait a fixed amount of time for whatever answer it might be (even a simple "Yes" to a question). Watch the movie "2001" or "2010" for examples and watch how spaceships far away communicate with Earth (Jupiter is about 1 light-hour from the Earth at closest approach, so it takes twice that much to get a reply, i.e. one way and the roundtrip). It might be possible to communicate by quantum entanglement, but that stuff is just too much of laboratory to be of any conceiveable usefulness -- think of Alessandro Volta working with electricity.
That stuff alone is enough to have a significant effect on how people relate, particularly when it comes to long-term relationships. Think of how sailors used to have (still have?) many lovers in different ports -- simply because they didn't have a way to keep in touch in a "close proximity" way. It gets worse unless you can find a way to make speedy travels across great distances -- which, at the time, we don't know how to do it. We're pretty much doing what people thought of for the past 50-100 years or so -- chemical rockets, or variations of it. Those are sloooow. Actually, it's worse: to keep the spaceships with a manageable size, you have to fire up the engine, make a burn, shut it down and coast the rest of the time (which is in the ballpark of 99% of the travel time); otherwise, you'd have to bring a whole lot more fuel to burn, and therefore the ship would have to be larger. Forget about it; you won't have planetary travel (in a way that gets you there instead of your great-great-great-grandsons) unless we find a way to overcome this hurdle.
Another problem is consumibles -- air, water, food. Air is recycled. Water is filtered out of your urine (blech!) or as a refuse from some fuel cells. Food -- well, remember that you have to keep the organic materials can also be recycled, and the Earth is a great big recycler (think "yummy strawberries"). So far, I don't know whether submarines recycle their own poo for food, but I imagine it wouldn't be too convincing or popular, but in space you'd find you'd have to recycle refuse into your own food. That is until you build a significantly large ecosystem (much larger than a spaceship) that has sources and sinks of nutrients to run by itself like Earth's natural ecosystem does.
But it does come to scale, and time. You need time to scale up everything -- living quarters, size of the ecosystem, number of people it can support, etc. How long it takes depends on the available resources -- not just materials, but also how you generate energy. If you live close to a star, you can use up solar power; otherwise, you have to produce energy such as with nuclear power (the Curiosity rover is nuclear-powered because Mars is at the borderline where solar panels start to become too inefficient to provide sufficient power to the rover).
