Just for one example, look up "The Geysers" geothermal plant in Northern California. They aren't even completely tapped yet, but they already put out almost as much energy as your average nuclear plant - and you don't have to worry about anything blowing up. Geothermal isn't ugly, or noisy, and doesn't actually involve putting caps on geysers (though they did in this case -- it was a very early plant). In fact, at current capacity, The Geysers powers about 1 million Northern California households.
Also, at The Geysers, they take in all of the treated waste water (graywater) from the City of Santa Rosa and Lake County and inject it down into the system. The waste is disposed of, cleaned by the heat, and will eventually provide more fluid to drive the turbines. Everybody wins!

I hear two different arguments. One is environment-based, and the other is cost-based.
1) Environment. There are very few things manufactured that do not have some environmental impact. The question is what is the impact compared to the next best alternative? For example, making a bicycle creates some pollution, but riding a bike compared to driving a car is still a net win in terms of pollution. In the same way, solar panels *in the right location* return enough energy to avoid pollution from other sources.
As far as toxic materials, paper is a good analogy. Toxic materials are used in the manufacture of paper, but the paper itself as an end product is not particularly poisonous. Same thing with silicon solar panels. There are other chemistries with more toxic content, but conventional silicon is fairly benign.
2) Cost. If the system produces electricity at a rate higher than you pay now, it will not be a good deal, unless you know for sure that electricity prices are going to rapidly rise. And even if electricity was going to rise, that would not be a reason to buy solar now, unless you knew that solar was going to rise in price, also. If solar prices were stable or falling, it would be better to wait until the system was definitely cheaper over time than the electricity you buy from the grid.
$30-40k is a possible price for a system. It depends a lot on where you live. In a northerly and cloudy climate, the system might have to be double the size for the same energy output, and would thus cost twice as much. The system we have on our house, which supplies substantially all our electricity, would cost a little less than $9k gross today. It uses standard commercial components, and was self-installed, with all permits. After the federal tax credit, it would be a little more than $6k net. But we are low users of electricity, and live in an ideal climate.
