Robert, it's pretty easy to misunderstand the specs here. The cube has a 1500 watt inverter, which means it can temporarily run an AC appliance up to 1500 watts, like a large refrigerator for example, and the 55 AH battery (amphour) might do it for an hour or two, that's it. There is not a 1500 watt solar panel, or panels here, the 5 panels are 16 watts each, for a total of 80 watts. This amount of solar is a mere pittance if you are trying to just survive the night with AC power. If you drain that battery, those miniscule panels will take weeks to replace the power. An 80 watt solar array wired for 12 volts will have a maximum amperage of about 4 amps. With 5 hours or so of direct sun a day you'll spend a long time catching up.
I understand your confusion, the people that sell these things are relying on it to sell these products. We have a portable system here I built myself with a 120 watt panel, 150% of the power output of the cube, and 4 golf cart batteries. The panel sells for around $120 on ebay, the batteries are $95 each, and my 750 watt inverter, which I rarely use, cost $69.95 at the auto parts store. Yet my system runs all the LED strip lights in our home, charges our phones and ipads/ipods, runs my MP3 speakers and the portable DVD player. That combined with a wood stove rounds out a pretty comfortable power outage. If you want to run AC appliances, just get the portable generator and a can of gas.
I like doing things green too, that's why our entire cottage runs on solar and wind. We have a 1400 watt solar array, it takes up a fair amount of roof space, it won't fit on a cooler lid. Our inverter is a 4000 watt synchronous sine wave model that can run the entire home, fridge, chest freezer, kitchen appliances and lights, no problem. The cost is probably just under $10,000 for the parts alone. These portable units, like the cube, always have a large inverter to sell themselves on a large output spec, but 80 watts of panel is like trying to heat your bedroom with a handful of candles. If you plug anything of significance into that cube, the battery will run for an hour or two, and then you need lots and lots of sun to recharge.
If you really want to go green, or want green backup power like we have, you have to learn more than you can get from an open forum like this. I'll list some sources below. In a nutshell, if you want to make your own, start with 2 golf cart batteries wired in series, this will give you a 12 volt 220 AH battery pack, then shop for a panel no larger than 80 watts. This will allow you to directly charge the battery without a charge controller, less money, complication and parts to break down. Now you have 4 times the storage of the cube, the same solar capability, and spend way less money. If you want to hook an inverter to it, just shop for one at Harbor Freight, a truck stop or auto parts store. If it were me, I'd stick to DC and use the power for LED lights and electronics charging.
