Challenges Of Clean Energy?

Cost and infrastructure.

The cost of maintaining windmills and building solar panels is a LOT higher than the cost of maintaining electricity generation plants fired by coal, natural gas, oil. Thats why wind and solar power costs so much more.

It costs about $25,000 to outfit a 1700sq ft house with solar panels. Think of how many decades it will take to recoup that cost vs. just paying your electric bill.

As for infrastructure... you need a LOT of land to lay out solar panels and to build wind mills. Land is not cheap. Natural gas powered cars is a viable option for the future- but then we'd need natural gas pumps, and that infrastructure takes time to build.

They are both cars and begin with the letter "E" but that is just about where the similarity ends. An electric car uses electricity to drive wheels through an electric motor. Electricity excels at transmission. As an energy medium it does not rely on chemical bonds in the same way as a "fuel." Some electric cars (see above) you can plug in and some get electricity in other ways. Even when electricity ultimately comes from the grid is has multiple ways it can be produced. Ultimately the power might come from the sun through solar panels, hydroelectric, wind, tides. It might come from nuclear or geothermal sources. Or it might come from the conventional sources of coal, oil or natural gas. What is difficult to do with electricity is store it. Storing it on a moving vehicle is even more of a problem for range, charge times, and the life of the storage medium. Electricity must conform to the laws of physics. Presently solar panels are about 10 to 20 % efficient at gathering sunlight.

Ethanol is a gasoline substitute. As a fuel it stores energy in chemical bonds. When the chemistry is used there are by products we often label as pollution. While fossil fuels stored ancient sunlight and chemistry, biofuels like ethanol store present day sunlight and chemistry. Biofuels must conform to the laws of biology. Photosynthesis is about 1 to 5% efficient.

When we compare sunlight to an electric car vs sunlight to an ethanol car we find that the electric car is about 100 times more efficient overall. (See full analysis in my answer here:;... )

Infrastructure is what is used to make up for deficiencies in the vehicle. Any vehicle that stores power on the vehicle will have limited range. Because ethanol is more energy dense than battery storage the ethanol car has longer range. Electricity however would be better served with an infrastructure of transmission not possible with ethanol vehicles. Wireless transmission with tuned capacitors in the roadway would give electric cars unlimited range with no need to refuel and no capacity loss over time. It would be the proper infrastructure for electric vehicles.
