I live in Arizona where the sun shines almost every day. It is one of the most desirable areas in the world for solar power. Very few people use it. Why? It is much more expensive. Our cost for grid power is about 10 cents per kilowatt-hour.
Here is actual FACTS. Our utility companies and state are offering a huge incentive for people to go solar. For an average size house I can get a $24,000 system for $12,000 with rebates and tax incentives. Sounds great, doesn't it. It says I will save 14% on my electric bill, and the system will pay for itself in about 20 years. Then I read the warranty and expected life of the equipment and all of it will probably not last over 20 years. That means it basically will never pay off.
This is for a system in the deserts of Arizona where the sun shines about 350 days a year!
Don't listen to these so called "Environmentalists". Get the facts. Don't believe any salesmen for solar systems. They lie like car salesmen. Get the facts.
I love solar. I am an engineer and have studied and worked on stand alone systems many times. I think solar is great. I just hate it when "Environmentalists" constantly overstate its capabilities and cost effectiveness. Think of it this way. One solar panel that cost $300-$600 will provide enough power to burn one large light bulb (100-150 watts) about 10 hours a day if the sun shines that much. If you live where it rains a lot, it will produce nothing many days of the year.

i will never understand why anyone talks about nuclear plants when we have 1000's of dams that have yet to be converted to hydroelectric at a fraction of the cost... i am a big fan of nuclear as it is an awesome fuel and can be safe but why even hassle with the opposition when all this water power is around?
oil companies are controlling us - otherwise ethanol would be 100% instead of 85% and NOT sold by gas companies who jack prices AND otherwise natural gas cars would have been pushed and subsidized...
CNG is 100% USA & about HALF the cost of gasoline which means it has always been USA and cheaper than gas for a long time & yet only ONE non commercial vehicle was ever made (although for a few years) & even then it was made by foreign car company... hmmmm eliminate import tax on the import that burns usa fuel?? Nah, lets instead give USA car company tax break so it can buy most parts from outside usa & then burn mostly non usa fuel - tell me that was not decided on by someone who was swayed by $$$$ in their pocket.

i truly believe we should pass law regulating power source for vehicles with ultimate result of 10 years from now 100% of new cars fueled by anything but gas or maybe even 80% and 20% diesel.. it would graduate starting at 10% first year and increase each year after... we have lots of alternatives and should let them compete.... another thing that really irks me is all the "clean coal" ads and statements... how stupid are we!?!?!?! we need to phase coal out... why is it even an issue when there are all these other cleaner 100% USA alternatives wind, water, solar, & yes even nuclear despite problems with waste dispossal although I believe if we increase site footprints then storage at each site could easily be economical, safe, and practical for 100's of years which would hopefully yield better technology for disposal & one thing we have extra of in usa is land... we must just be sheep, baaaaaaaaa, guess we will know novemeber 4th if we are braindead sheep who follow and believe whatever we are told or can think for ourselves
