With over 25 years of experience. They sound like they would know about recycling, and at least be able to give you more information.
I think because it's such a specialized item that is being recycled, there aren't going to be many options/drop off locations. Which ever option you choose (disassemble, or recycle as a whole) might depend on if you're looking to "save the environment" or "make a buck."

I am not sure what kind of solar panel information you are looking for but the following provides basically how they work. Near the bottom of the page is some more information not on how they work but on other things.
A solar cell converts sunlight into electricity. Photons from the sun strike the solar panel made of a semiconductor material. The most common material used for a solar cell is silicon. I use compact florescent in as many light fixtures as I can. I recycle as much as I can. I compost. I grow and make as much as I can by myself. I have a garden, I make my own bread, clothes, soap etc. I figure every time I cut out the factory it has to better for the environment.
