The system cost $26K, but I got a rebate from my utility of $10K so I only paid $16K. Many people would say that is a lot of money. The system will pay for itself in 6.5 years, it is guaranteed for 25 years, so I will be getting most of my energy for free for about 18 years. If you also take into account that electricity rates increase an average of 5% each year, which means in about 14 years will will be paying double what we are paying today for electricity. I will be saving well over $50K over the life of the panels.
They have become more affordable with better tax credits as well. I only got a $2K fed tax credit. Starting this year you can get 30% of the total cost as a tax credit which would have increased my tax credit to $7800.
Another thing to compare it to. I paid $32K for my pool and $22K for my wood floors. So, my panels are the least expensive of the major upgrades I've made to my home.
