Problems arise in that the wire is seldom heavy enough, meaning you attracted the lightning and didn't get rid of it, or the grounding rod isn't deep enough, meaning you've diverted the electric to the floor. Also, over time the wire deteriorates until it's not strong enough. Further. once it's been hit a time or two it's useless. Ground rods have to be huge and deep
There are also problems in that huge strikes won't tamely go to ground, even with a good ground wire. They can electrocute anything standing too close to the grounding rod. I've known horses electrocuted in their stalls.
A well built run in shed, with wind bracing in the corners, and anchored to the ground properly, will provide reasonable protection from wind and hail. Place it well, and you diminish the chance of lightning strikes.
Metal roofs and metal siding all require grounding! I prefer wood or vinyl.

If it's a direct hit, they're not safe inside or out; if it's a near miss they're safer inside.
I do not shut them in whenever there's a possibility of bad weather; they'd be in more often than not! But they have well constructed, carefully placed shelters in all fields, and they have not so far been injured.
I never risk my own life, or allow others to risk theirs. If a tornado blows up before I can safely stable the horses, I do not go out and try to do it. I love my horses, but if I die, they're SOL anyway.

3. Use pervious concrete instead of a paved driveway (this allows stormwater to be absorbed back into the ground instead of running off.
4. Use dual flush toilets and high efficiency faucets
5. Xeriscape (an alternative to landscaping)
6. Rainwater collection system (aka rainwater harvesting)
7. Use greywater to irrigate your lawn (greywater is the water that comes from places like your sinks and dish washer).
8. For energy efficiency, make outside walls out of SIPs, straw bales, or ICFs. (sorry...look those up)
9. Use good insulation.
10. Solar panels or micro-wind turbines
11. In the northern hemisphere, have lots of south-facing windows and less north facing windows. This allows you to collect heat from the sun in the winter without losing a lot of heat.
12. Use recycled materials
13. Use local materials that don't have to be transported far
14. Use rapidly renewable products like bamboo or cork floors
15. Low VOC paint (that means it will be healthier to breathe)
