I just did one. I used a phototransistor in a voltage divider circuit hooked up to the reset pin of a 555 timer. then ground the trigger pin.
I had set up the circuit to blink the led as an option but if you ground the trigger i will not blink. But when the voltage on the reset pin (4) goes under .7 volts the output is low. Set up the phototransistor in series with a 10k resistor and tie the reset pin to the phototransistor.
So when the resistance of the phototransistor goes low enough the voltage across it goes less than .7 volts and the 555 turns off.
