Advantages of rechargeable lithium ion batteries are, high efficiency, no memory = charge and discharge depth can be very short, light weight for physical size and watt hours stored. Rapid charge and rapid discharge are possible without shortening the life of the battery significantly. The disadvantages are related to the the advantages = dangerous fault currents can flow leading to fire or explosion. The cells can get dangerously hot if charge or discharge rate is excessive. Both over charging and over discharging shorten the life.
144 watts of solar panel (for 12 volts at 12 amp-hours) would take you from minimum charge to maximum charge in one hour in very bright sunlight = not an excessive charge rate, but I suggest no more solar panels are desirable without careful controls to prevent possible over charging. Fewer solar panels (such as one 5 watt panel) will supply about one amp hour per average day = 12 days to go from minimum charge to maximum charge.= this is also ok, if you can wait a day or two to get a partial charge. The solar panel delivers DC voltage, and your pump is a standard AC voltage, so no it can't and won't work. There are solar powered water pumps that can be sourced from the internet or many garden stores, but they are relatively costly, and they only work when in full, direct sunlight (the problem with all solar electric panels). Even in full, direct sunlight, the angle of the sun varies throughout the middle of the day, and total power varies. I wouldn't expect the 9V panels you have to "work" as power source to the 12V pumps.

Hi Andrew...A 1200 mah battery is the same thing as a 1.2 AH battery, just divide by 1000. Assuming the phone uses up this battery in 6 hours, in theory, it should take rougly 35/1.2 = roughly 30 times as long. 30 X 6 hours is 180 hours, or 7 days. There are a couple problems here though. Mainly, since the phone is using 3.7 volts instead of 12, you have to put the car charger cord between the phone and the car battery. What you are really doing is charging the phones battery with the car battery, and there are certain losses involved. The other issue is that since the car battery is 12 volts instead of 3.7, it really has 3 times the voltage, which means taking the 180 hours and multiplying it by another 3. So in theory again, you could streatch it to 540 hours, or 3 weeks. The problem here is we don't know how efficient the car cord is at converting the voltage. If it is using a simple zener diode and resistor voltage regulator combination, most of that additional voltage will be wasted anyway.

There are only two ways to actually get at the number you want. One is to use a digital multimeter reading amp between the car battery and the phone cord. Once you know the actual amp draw, divide it into 30 to get hours of endurance, then take the hours times .8 to get the number of hours from a full battery that the device will likely work before the battery voltage gets too low. The second way, and probably the easiest is to just start with a full battery, and plug the phone in, then see how long it lasts. In my experience, nothing beats the test drive for good data.

If you just want a good guess, go with the 1 week, it will likely be close to that taking all the variables into account. If you want to keep that car battery running all the time with solar, at that current draw, a 12 volt nominal panel rated at 25 watts would be plenty. First Some Info: Located In Ny. Looking For An Average Size System For The Roof Of A 3Bdrm House. At This Point I'M Not Interested In A Battery Bank. I Have The Fabrication Skills/Tools, And A Good Amount Of Experience With Dc Circuits, Not So Much With Ac. If I Were To Purchase And Assemble All The Components Myself Would I Run Into Any Problems? What Phases Of The Install Would Need To Be Done By A Licensed Electrician? I Would Like To Do All But The Grid Tie In Inverter. Where I Am Located I Am Eligible For A Rebate Of $1.75 Per Watt (Up To $10K) , But Only If Done By An Approved Installer. That Being Said, How Much Could I Really Save By Going Diy?/What Is The Going Rate For Installed Systems, Per Watt? Thank You.

Regarding your questions about purchase and assembly, I wouldn't expect you to run into problems, but you might be a bit inefficient and have a few surprises. Depending on your Authority Having Jurisdiction, you may need to have a licensed electrician do some of the work, but my company has done numerous installs in midstate NY, and we are not generally required to use a licensed electrician. Generally, they can do the AC work (connecting to the electrical system), and you would be able to do the "Solar" portion of the work.
Our company is an approved installer under the NYSERDA Program you mentioned. The rebate is actually $1.50 at this time and goes up to $10.5K. We have done numerous projects under this program and we take care of all the paperwork for you.
You are elegible for a 30% Federal Tax Credit as well as a 25% State Tax Credit (up to $5,000).
To be honest, I expect your net cost to be higher for a DIY project. The NYSERDA rebate covers around 35% of project costs, which is very significant. Obviously, our company would save on parts and components as well, due to bulk buying and supplier relationships.
Going rate per watt for a 5 to 10 kW system in NY with our company would be in the $4 to $5 per watt range (this includes all the utility work, permitting, grant work, etc.....). The price would be on the lower side with a roof mount versus a ground mount, and also is less for central inverters versus micro inverters. Micro inverters, however, do offer a 25 year warranty and higher performance.

My Question Is How Would I Go About Doing The Same Thing Except With A Laser To Replace The Led?
