You would need a vast solar sail to get any appreciable force enough to push you. The most fuel efficient path from Earth to Mars is something known as a Hohmann Transfer. Essentially you leave earth and enter a circular orbit around the sun at a radius of 1 AU, then you accelerate until you're launched into an orbit at 1.5 AU (the distance mars orbits at) where you conveniently meet up with Mars who happens to be on the opposite side of a full orbit.

First off, in space nothing slows you down, so you only need an acceleration for a short time, then you can coast for a while. A solar sail would never be able to produce appreciable accelerations such that this trip would be possible, especially for larger ships or voyages in the future that might entail human transport.

Secondly, solar sails can only push you in one direction -- away from the sun. That means even a Hohmann Transfer wouldn't be possible with a solar sail. You would have to leave Earth and move outwards hoping to hit Mars as you travel away from the sun. The chances of this are very very slim. Even if you did all your calculations and timed it just right, it'd be a long shot and such a planetary alignment would not occur frequently enough to allow for it's every day usage.

In summation, it would be a very slow and ineffectual way to travel between planets and it would almost certainly fail if attempted.

Enacted in August 1997, this personal income tax credit originally applied to expenditures on solar-electric (PV) equipment used on residential property. Pacific Gas & Electric just signed another deal for solar thermal power plants, in the Mojave desert, with Brightsource for 900 megawatts, bringing the total deals in the last year to over 2 gigawatts.
