With the proper sized panels you can run anything. The thing that strikes me about your question is that it's often still hot after sun down. If you ONLY run the AC on the solar panels you're going to find that you'd wish you had a way of running it from house current too. So you might want to upgrade your plans to include the possibility of running it AFTER sun down.

Here in Utah, I'll run my cooling system all night. If there's no sun at night and I were powering it using PVP's (Photo Voltaic Panels) I'd not be getting a good night sleep. If YOUR are is not hot at night then you may find a system big enough to handle the load of the AC. And I'm also sure that BOB's answer is nonsense. You can usually generate far more energy than you need just on the calculations of the surface area of your roof. And that's ONLY the side that faces the sun.

My roof faces east / west. I don't have a south facing slope to mount PVP's to. So anything on my roof would have to be tilted to the south.
