Electricity is important because it is the most efficient method to transport energy and information across long terrestrial distances.

You can use as much electrical energy as you want. If you self-generate electrical energy with a hand-crank generator, or with your own local wind-turbine/hydro-turbine/solar panel, you can use as much of it as you want, and it will not harm the environment one bit.

It is only when you get your electrical energy from "the grid" that it is important to not use so much of it. You pay the utility company which delivers you electrical energy by the Joule for it (well, actually the kilowatt-hour, but the units measure the same concept)...and in addition, a fixed cost just for them to maintain the distribution line to your house. If you consume more electrical energy, you pay a greater utility bill.

In addition to the utility bill cost for you, why else is it important to be conscience of how much electrical energy you consume? Well, what is the source of the electrical energy? Answer: fossil fuel combustion, biomass or landfill waste combustion, or nuclear reactions. Some may come from hydroelectricity, wind turbines, or solar photovoltaic panels, but that is a small amount of it. The majority of it comes from combustion or nuclear reactions, both of which thermally pollute with their heat rejection (which a heat engine ultimately must do in order to be a possible process), and it it comes form combustion, the power plant pollutes because of all the exhaust gasses expelled in our atmosphere.

I operate a 25 kw pv system at my workplace. It cost $100,000 (after tax and utility rebates), produces $4,000 per year. A comparable residential system (panels, converters, installation) of about 3 kw would cost about $12,000 and would produce (depending on your sunny days) about 7,000 kwh/yr worth $500/yr (depending on your local cost of electricity). Pay back: 25 years, by which time panels or converters have failed and need to be replaced. It is not an entirely profitable enterprise, or in other words: it is not efficient. It will not become cheaper. There are new panels that increase output from 20 percent to 40 percent, but they are twice as expensive. The only thing that will make it "efficient" is when the cost of electricity increases due to political pressure or scarcity of resources. Then it will be relatively viable.

Using solar energy directly for heating is a more efficient method. For example: sun shining through a window heats up a mass (stones, water, etc), storing heat for use as needed in a household forced-air heating system.

The prime reason is cost.

To build a system able to supply 2Kw of (AC) energy 24/7 will cost around $30,000 Australian (probably pretty similar in USD). With careful selection of energy efficient appliances this is probably enough for most households provided you use a separate solar water heating system for baths, and that your house is well insulated.

The battery issue is basically that batteries aren't very efficient. A battery will generally only return about 20% of what you put into it, and on top of that, batteries supply DC. If you use AC appliances, then you lose even more in converting from AC to DC.

If you want to lower your consumption without making a big spend out, I would suggest looking at Solar hot water systems, as these typically retail around the $3000 mark, and will typically pay for themselves within a few years by what they will save on your bills. I Am Very Curious About Solar Energy. I Hear It'S Expensive So I Just Want To Start Out Small. Radio Shack Sells A Panel Of 6V Solar Cells And I Wanted To Buy It But 6V Isn'T That Much. What Could I Possibly Use It For? Any Suggestions On How To Switch To Solar Energy? I'M Obviously Not Powering My Whole House With Radio Shack Panels Just Want To Know Where To Start. Most small wind turbines, I know its not solar, are powered with an ac delco car alternator, they look very easy to make. For hot water try this, coil up several hunderd feet of water hose in a black plastic drum and put it in the sun, it will be very hot...these and others like them are simple,not solar , but simple...and free!!! See what you can come up with.
