I think that it is a mute point. I think that carbon offset credits are useless - feel good measures that will allow polluters to continue to pollute while simultaneously advertising how much they are concerned for the environment.. "Just Look at our Carbon Offset Credits People!".
Plus, it is useless to harm the US economy by enacting draconian environmental laws - while China and India pollute like crazy.
Basically the only thing that can save us is the displacement of fossil fuels by new technology. So if any efforts are made, it needs to be in the arena of research into technologies that can actually work just as well as fossil fuels. I think this eventually happen because fossil fuels power heat engines.. and heat engines are terribly inefficient. about 8 Billion Quads of solar energy hit the earth each year - the entire human race uses about 400 Quads of energy per year.. do the math. Our future is solar. But it is debatable whether we will survive long enough to see a solar utopia.
For me, the issue isn't fossil fuels - but National Security. I think it is just stupid to put all of our eggs into one energy basket. We are heavily dependent on places like Saudi Arabia and Venezuela for oil. And drilling more US oil is only going to make a TINY bump in our import vs domestic production capacity. In a few years the world is going to hit the wall of a peak in the worlds ability to supply petroleum. Prices are going to go thru the roof again. And with the spike in energy price - comes a decrease in profitability of our businesses and corporations = another recession. So it is just insanely stupid to continue relying so much on petroleum. That is why the US military is spending big bucks via DARPA to transform the military into a biofueled military machine. Because unlike republicans and democrats.. it's a matter of life or death for the military to be able to fuel their tanks and planes.
We've built a civilization around fossil fuels - and none of that is going to change on a personal level - regardless of how green you think you are, or how SUV lovin conservative you think you are. We exist in a world created and fueled by petroleum - the only thing that can change that fact is something better than petroleum. The technology is coming, but will it arrive in time?
