Hey A S, we have a set up at our cabin just like this. Ours uses two Trojan T-105 golf cart batteries for storage and a 53 watt panel. You said $100 will cover cables, controller, panel and battery, that sounds really inexpensive to me. Batteries have gotten expensive the last couple years, the battery you have in mind might be pretty low capacity.
T-105 batteries are 6 volt, that's why you need a pair of them wired in series to make 12 volts. But if you have 2 of them, the total capacity is 220 amp hours (AH). Our home has a dozen LED strip lights in various places, under cabinets in the kitchen, over the shower, and so on. The real beauty of this is that the LED strip lights work when the power is out, and they also work when the power is on, either way they get their power from our panel, so they reduce the cost of your electric bill a bit. This works really well partly because we have such a large storage bank. With 3/4 of our strip lights on, the battery bank only has to deliver 1.6 amps, or about 20 watts. Even if it is cloudy for 4 or 5 days, the battery can keep up fine. Good place to find those T-105 batteries is any golf cart repair/parts place, look in the phone book.
A 53 watt panel will have to work pretty hard to replace all of that however, most panels are wired for 18 volts open circuit, which means it only delivers 53 / 18 = 3 amps. If I use 1.6 amps for 30 hours, the panel will need 20 good hours of sun to replace it. It's enough, but just barely. The real reason we have it set up this way is to avoid using a charge controller. There is a rule of thumb that says if your panels amp rating is less than 2% of your battery amp hour rating, you cannot overcharge the battery. Charge controllers cost money, and in our research, it appears they are the first thing to break down. Our system has been running 13 years like this with no problems. The only real maintenance is to trim the trees south of your panel, and add distilled water to your batteries once each month. Just keep a gallon near by.
Using this rule, you can go as high as 80 watts of panel with 2 trojan T-105 batteries. The only thing you need to make it work is a diode between the panel and battery. A diode is just an electrical check valve, allowing the panel to charge the battery, but not allowing the battery to discharge into the panel at night. Most panels come with diodes installed in the junction box when you buy them, but if not, you can get one good up to 6 amps at Radio Shack for less than one dollar. You can use number 14 romex wire from the panel to the battery, just get the polarity correct. If you find it isn't charging, try turning the diode around, it might be installed backwards.

Another cool thing to do is have a cigarette lighter outlet someplace in the house that connects to this battery bank, then go to Walmart and get a splitter that has 3 outlets and a USB plug to plug into the outlet. You can charge cell phones, ipods and such from your solar panel, we do it here all the time. Again, this works when the power is out, or anytime. It will work fine off the battery at night, you don't have to have sun at that moment. I also like to have a set of Harmon Kardon HK-206 computer speakers plugged into the battery bank, they are the only type that work on 12 VDC, you can find them on Ebay pretty cheap, then plug your ipod into them and crank out some good music on solar power, that's how I listen to my MP3 here. Why Is The Solar Power Still So Expansive?
First, because solar panels are expensive. There is a limit to how cheaply you can grown silicon crystals, put them into panels, and ship them to where you need them. Why don't cars cost $100 each? Why don't computers cost $1? There is simply a minimum cost to produce this technology.
Now there are some interesting technologies on the horizon that may reduce that cost of production. Thin film solar, for example, will likely cut the cost of solar power dramatically. But it is not quite fully commericalized yet.
Second, it is expensive because we compare it to other ways of producing electricity, like coal. Coal is very very cheap. So in comparison, solar seems very expensive. Ground beef is an expensive food if you compare it to pasta. But compared to lobster, its quite cheap.
Once our energy costs increase, as they certainly will, then solar energy will seem less and less expensive.
