Let me start off by saying we (my family and I) live 100% off of the grid and are completely self-sufficient with a 0% Carbon footprint. I believe this is the first step anyone can make “help the environment”. Once you convert your own life style to a greener more eco friendly route, you can start helping others.
We definitely didn't start global warming, but we definitely do contribute to it now.
Natural gas (or Methane along with other thanes) for example, is completely a natural contributer to global warming and is derived pretty much the same way as oil. ie. Matter (animal, plant etc) decomposes over time resulting in a anaerobic (hope I spelled that right) decay of non-fossil organic material / gas (natural gas or methane).
One problem with global warming is that the concept is so vague in the minds of the people. The critical interpretation is basically how it’s explained in school and the news. However most of the public see global warming connected with the ozone and pollutants which cause harmful greenhouse gasses, etc. therefore investigating and fighting for things like alternative energy (ie. Solar, wind, hydrogen, ethanol, biodiesel, etc)
Greenhouse gases are real and do contribute to global warming. Think of the different gas layers like ozone (o3) that circumference the globe as the clear plastic on a greenhouse. Longer rays of light from the Sun go in and reflect off different thermal masses bouncing back and creating shorter lengths of energy that cannot exist the plastic barrier. These beams then just continue to bounce around inside the green house until they’re finally absorbed completely (some do escape but very few), thereby warming the greenhouse greatly even in cold temperatures.
Basically there are 2 ways that this reaction (or lack of) affects the planet. Global warming and global cooling.
1. as we add to the gases in the stratosphere, where the ozone layer is (Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc), we add to the plastic of the greenhouse, trapping more short wave length energy and heating the earth more.
2. as we deplete the ozone (with chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs), we allow more long wave length energy, which bounces back out to space without heating any thermal masses on earth, thereby cooling the planet.

maybe 150 watts, enough for a few light bulbs, possibly a small TV. Add up the wattage numbers of the items you want to run and see if it's less than 150.
You will also need a battery, a charge controller, and an inverter.
Remember that the wattage number is only in direct sunlight, with the sun perpendicular to the panel. If just one small part of the panel is in shade, you get no output.
As soon as the sun moves away from perpendicular, the power output starts to drop.
How Can The Electric Companies Afford To Put Solar Panels Everywhere, But Not On Our Houses?
It Seems To Me That We Are Just Letting The Power Companies Capitalize On A Power Source That Really Should Be More Accessable To Us, The Ones That Have Been Paying For Nuclear And Other Power Sources That We Can'T, By Law, Have Installed On Our Property.
Keep in mind the issues of scale:
Solar panels on a commercial scale cost something on the order of $7.25/watt to install, of which roughly half of that is for the panel itself (retail). This includes inverter technology but not storage. This works out to about $7,250 per KW installed.
A nuclear plant in today's dollars will run between $5,500 and $6,000 per KW installed.
A 5,000 watt solar system on your house will cost approximately $35,000 to install. Cheaper per watt than commercial as there is no supporting infrastructure to build.
The differences between actual costs and what is paid by the end-user are subsidies provided by state and local governments and utilities.
So, if you are in an unsubsidized area, you are perfectly free to install solar power on your property - if you can afford it.
Now, if full life-cycle costs are included (installation, maintenance, cost-of-operation, and final disposal when done) nuclear and solar are also very close in cost. The difference is that a 480MW nuclear plant may be fit on about 660 acres of ground including cooling towers, access roads, set-backs and so forth - and could be set on less than 100 acres if necessary (many are).
The same capacity solar plant (at 10 watts per square-foot, peak power) would cover 11,000 acres or so, *not* including infra-structure, access roads, set-backs and so forth.
Solar power is a feel-good solution that is pretty impractical on the face of it *UNLESS* there is no alternative solution. But, because it is being subsidized by various sources, is highly visible and has all sorts of warm-and-fuzzy but generally thoughtless advocates it is popular beyond its worth.
We are actually considering it _because_ of the subsidies. But at face-cost nohownoway.
