Don't do it! It takes years to get your money back. Your better to put the money into insulation and or buying geo thermal unit. I knew someone who install solar panels on his roof to generate hydro and he didn't notice much of a change on his hydro bill and then he had roof problems .
Central air units in last 2 years have become very efficient . Almost half the hydro of ones 10 years ago. If you can afford buy a geo thermal unit. It uses the heat of the ground in the winter 2 heat your house during the winter and the coolness of the ground to cool your house. They aren't cheap though. If you plan on living in your house for more than 10 years and have the room in the yard to install then go for it. No how you slice it though AC units use way more hydro than solar panels can produce. You would need about half a football field with a huge battery storage system to run a AC unit.
When a company states you might on hydro I would stay away. Also remember they do not tell you about the costs of the upkeep on the solar panels and converter and batteries

But the real reason is you put this off for way too long due to its complexity...that's alright, been there, procrastinated that.
I would get a sheet of 1/4" plywood. Draw out the gable ends of the house with peaked roof, rectangular sides, roof panels and floor. Use strips of solid wood at the corners to join the panels together. Depending on the size of this house, the joining strips could be lengths of 1"x1", 1"x2", or 2"x2". The best method would probably be using white glue and brads or small finishing nails to nail and glue the panels to the joiner strips.
For the solar cell, I would get a small, self-contained photovoltaic charger. This should be locally available at Radio Shack or possibly even a variety store and is all set up to connect to whatever load you want. For lights in the house, the easiest would be small LEDs. Get resistors to connect in series with each LED. The LED's should have a mW power rating and maximum voltage.
If LED has mW power rating, maximum current, i = P/V, where P = maximum power rating of LED and V = rated voltage output of the photovoltaic charger.
The minimum resistor value, R = V / i. Purchase a resistor for each LED larger than the value you calculate. The power rating of the charger and of each LED will determine how many LED's you can power in parallel.

Is It Just Me Or Does It Seem Like Many More People Would Use Solar/Alt. Energy If It Were More Affordable?
