I like the way Robert's answer starts out, but then it gets a little wild. By mining earth's mantle (or core) its mass does not change. Most of the minerals recovered from the core would be fairly evenly distributed over the surface. Also, gravitation and magnetism are (at present) unrelated forces. The earth would not go spinning off like a deflating balloon.
If we mined a few megatons from the mantle we could recycle that material indefinitely. Nickel and iron do not transmute through common use. As to how long before we develop this technology--it may be quite some time. Mineral extraction from the mantle is bound to prove rather expensive. At the present time what we do is mine minerals coughed up along plate margins (and of course, anywhere else they are found in crustal rock). It takes eons for mantle material to well up through orogeny, and much of that is subducted ocean floor.
I can't think of any particularly bad side effects. The process might entail some sort of strip mining. Huge gouges in earth's crust could be problematic, if we cannot come up with a better way.
Here is one better way--mine mars. Mars has a rich mantle, and because the planet is smaller (square cube law) it should have radiated more heat. Also, mining operations there won't disturb any fragile ecosystem. Mars also has a deep gash, the Valles Marineras, which would facilitate access to its mantle.
We could build a big mass driver on the martian surface to launch raw iron ore into earth orbit, where it could be smelted in giant orbitting mirror furnaces. We would probably be better off leaving this material in orbit, rather than returning it to earth's surface. It will be more useful there in the construction of space stations and habitats.
I once calculated that there is enough sand in the martian desert and iron in its mantle to erect a ring of solar collectors around the sun. Think of what could be done with all that nearly limitless energy!

I don't believe power is stored anywhere. It is probably because it would take mass amounts of batteries (expensive) to store power for many homes/businesses.

I have been working with nuclear power for about 30 years, I would be glad to have a Nuclear power plant or high level waste disposal facility in my backyard. My family and I live in a home within 10 miles of a nuclear power plant. (where I work) I have a great understanding of the risks involved and am completely comfortable with a plant "in my backyard".
