you probably have a 12Vdc 18 Watt solar panel, to figure out its charging amps capability we do this equation
Watts/Volts=Amps
18watts/12Vdc=1.5Amps

this is a conservative figure, since solar panel ratings are calculated using winter time sunlight, sunny locations and more daytime hours will give you higher amps.

I can tell you for a fact you can save money with solar panels. I have a system. I have a 3.74 kw dc system which cost $26K, I got a $10K rebate from my utility and a $2K fed tax credit. I will break even or get ROI in 6-7 years. My system generates about $2K of energy per year.

I still use much of my energy when the sun goes down. All businesses get a 30% fed tax credit when they install a system, and many states offer larger rebates to businesses.

There are many factors that will determine the efficiency of the panels, my orientation isn't ideal so that drops my production a little. Shade can reduce the number of hours a panel can produce. The number of hours of sunlight and the number of days it is cloudy can affect production as well. Your utility policies can have an economic impact, not all utilities allow the meter to run backwards or buy back the excess energy you produce, most schools are out of session during the longest most productive days.

They might fine you if you try to connect your equipment to their grid without their permission or required equipment, but they won't be upset. You have to take a good look at your bill one day to understand this. I don't know what your rate structure is, but if you're spending $400 for electricity in one month, your home probably uses 8 to 10 times the electricity ours does. Even if you turned everything off and used none, you would still get a bill, there are connection fees, taxes, and other items that are added on after the calculation is done for the amount of usage you have. The power company is happy to let you produce all your own power, and keep paying them the "fees" alone, they still get money from you.

We've been powering our home from the wind and sun for 12 years now, and on average our electric bill is around $ 4 to 10 dollars a month.
