One reason it's expensive is because you would need batteries which in themselves are expensive but they are also inefficient, lead acid batteries which are the least expensive per capacity are 95% efficient at discharge but only 50% efficient at charging, they are also not very good at deep discharges though you can buy deep discharge versions, basically even with the deep discharge versions, you lose a lot of battery life if you discharge by more than 20% hence you design the system with five times the daily cycle. Fortunately, the excess capacity would allow you to weather 3 to 4 cloudy days. The low efficiency more than doubles the amount of solar panels required.
Another reason is that the inverter, like your gas generator, must be selected for the expected peak load. An inverter is 95% efficient or higher when the power from it is being used at full load but only 50% efficient when the load is low. The problem is you need a net metering contract with the utility and they will charge a monthly fee for that and if the grid loses power ( a power outage ) so do you. You would also be affected by any changes in the net metering contract that may happen in the future.
Unless the cost of power from your utility is very high as in greater than 40 cents a kwh, a grid free solar photovoltaic system would not be an economic selection. Even a grid tied system would require government subsidies to be worthwhile.
