I'd suggest solar hot water first - cheaper to put in, quicker payback.

We put up solar electric in 2006. It's not a big moneymaker in our location, and also, I unfortunately oversized our system. Still, it's comparable to the electric company, maybe a slight savings over time. Pretty much no maintenance, no problems.

And if you arrange the panels in tilted rows, then the front row will block the one behind it in the winter. All that said, if the roof is a square, 30 feet on a side, it seems you could fit a single tilted row of panels on it without drawbacks. I'm guessing that would be 2.5 kW or so. That also assumes there are no obstructions like other buildings, wires, or drain vents.
