The nice thing about off the shelf products like this is the cost. You can buy similar modules to ours for around $300 USD. While a Sanyo HIT module can make the same power in less space, it will cost you almost twice as much per watt for the high tech device, so in the end, both our arrays will put out the same 1.4 KW, but mine will cost half as much. This is why people in the know are not concerned about efficiency. Unless you are trying to power the space station, or an RV completely by solar, better to use a little more space and save a ton of money.

Solar electric, or, "Photovoltiac," panels are made from silicone wafers. They start with a solid ingot of pure silicone, slice it into hundreds of very thin layers, less than one mm thick. Then they take half of the wafers and dope them with phosphorous, and the other half are doped with boron. When this is complete, they take one boron doped and one phosphorous doped wafer, glue them together with an electrical conducting epoxy cement, and attach small solder lines to each side, which connect to a wire at one end. When the sun shines on the cell, the photons striking the wafers cause a reaction which forces free electrons off of one wafer and onto the other, and a small voltage is created. Each cell creates about 1/2 volt in direct sunlight. By taking 36 of them and connecting them in series, we can make 18 volts DC, which is used to charge a 12 volt battery. If you look carefully at a completed solar panel, you will almost always see 36 individual cells under the glass all neatly tucked close together. If the installer needs a higher voltage, they simply connect several panels in series until they reach the desired voltage. Many newer grid tied inverter systems work at voltages upwards of 200 volts DC, so as many as a dozen of these panels might be used to form one high voltage string.

For most people, it isn't something they'll be able to do effectively in their basement on the weekends.
